Nowadays, we live in a world
where firms are looking for a way to produce efficiently and make profit while
minimizing their environmental impact. One of the ways is to use clean
technology.
Clean technology can be
defined as “a diverse range of products, services, and processes that harness
renewable materials and energy sources, dramatically reduce the use of natural
resources, and cut or eliminate emissions and wastes.”
The concept of Clean
Technologies includes many tools like renewable energy,
green transportation or electric motors.
With a view to evaluate the
efficiency of these technologies, it became necessary to implement tools in
order to help companies in this initiative. One famous tool is the
Environmental Technology Assessment process, a methodology created by the
United Nations Environment Program, which is composed of five steps:
- Description of the technology: its nature, function,
goals, life cycle and environmental pressures;
- Evaluation of the requirements of the technology and
the resulting environmental pressures;
- Preliminary judgment: comparison of the
environmental pressures of the technology with its economic viability;
- Comparative assessment of alternative technologies: considering if there are alternative
ways to achieve the same goals with less environmental impact compared with the
existing technology;
- Decide if a consensus decision can be reached,
regarding the environmental and related performances of the proposed
technology.
